Research Through the Eyes of Legality

What defines a legal website? How do we pursue a website’s credibilities? These are all relevant questions when conducting research on a particular topic, such as the history of a digital topic.

The technological formation of the insulin pump impacted the daily lifestyle of a diabetic. It is through the digital past that I am able to unearth how the insulin pump was created, but first… I must find the proper website to conduct my research!

At first, I searched for angles to my topic that websites would hopefully have answers to; however, after using the resource whois.com I noticed the credibility underlying under the domain registration. My first website seemed like a wealth of knowledge until I research the domain registration and found it to be a false informational site. My quest begins again… I hunt, peck, type, check the domain registration, and sha-bam… I find it; the website about the formation of insulin pumps in history!

Second base: legality!

My second website was not only much more reliable, but the legality of the website seemed authentic. The only sad part about my first website was the information seemed so much more valuable. I had a hard time detaching myself and questioning the legality of the website. The format was a bit phony and the information was not cited in addition. The information seemed copied and pasted or made up. I could not find this information anywhere else on the web which made me question the true value. The type of information on the page was factual, but it also gave reference to the sources included. There was not a copyright trademark inputted anywhere on the page.

From my research question, I found out using this website: The creator of the insulin pump was a college undergraduate student, Dean Kamen. He used his creation of the insulin pump first to help meditate cancer via chemotherapy. From his experience treating cancer with the pump, he moved his experiments into Diabetic related fields. He founded the first insulin pump company and sold it to a company.
