Security, Safety, and Shenanigans

We hear about it all of the time… Identity theft, but do we ever truly think we will play the role of the victim one day?

I am sure the writers of the two articles were thinking the exact same thing as they watched the digital takeover on all of their accounts. Both men were trying to find the missing link, the twit who snatched their passwords, and tried to sabotage their identity. These men helplessly were direct messaging their hacker via Twitter to try to find out where the hole of security could have possibly started. Finally, both writers were informed the trouble started with the Applecare ID.

Now, I assume most all of us in the Digital Past have a MacBook and iPhone.. maybe even an iPad etc. I see everyone in class texting away and using their MacBooks to “take notes.” The more alarming fact is.. Are we really protected?

Think of all of the countless passwords or the only password that has been created to manage all of the accounts we use on a daily basis. How do you go about creating these passwords? How relevant are they to your life; therefore, how easy are they for someone to guess? If you answered with more a confident answer in your password-making abilities well then take into consideration… NONE OF US ARE REALLY PROTECTED nowadays. There are numerous ways for hackers to obtain our information, because of how strong our digital presence on the web is from social media. I cannot forget to mention all of our accounts such as Amazon and Apple that contain our credit card or PayPal information.

Putting trust in such a vulnerable state on the web just does not seem right? I, myself, am almost 100% certain I have my passwords secured, if secured is even an appropriate word. I try not to purchase things online if at all possible, because I simply do not trust my credit card number being put out in someone else’s hands to keep safe.

“If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom.”
–Dwight Eisenhower

Research Through the Eyes of Legality

What defines a legal website? How do we pursue a website’s credibilities? These are all relevant questions when conducting research on a particular topic, such as the history of a digital topic.

The technological formation of the insulin pump impacted the daily lifestyle of a diabetic. It is through the digital past that I am able to unearth how the insulin pump was created, but first… I must find the proper website to conduct my research!

At first, I searched for angles to my topic that websites would hopefully have answers to; however, after using the resource whois.com I noticed the credibility underlying under the domain registration. My first website seemed like a wealth of knowledge until I research the domain registration and found it to be a false informational site. My quest begins again… I hunt, peck, type, check the domain registration, and sha-bam… I find it; the website about the formation of insulin pumps in history!

Second base: legality!

My second website was not only much more reliable, but the legality of the website seemed authentic. The only sad part about my first website was the information seemed so much more valuable. I had a hard time detaching myself and questioning the legality of the website. The format was a bit phony and the information was not cited in addition. The information seemed copied and pasted or made up. I could not find this information anywhere else on the web which made me question the true value. The type of information on the page was factual, but it also gave reference to the sources included. There was not a copyright trademark inputted anywhere on the page.

From my research question, I found out using this website: The creator of the insulin pump was a college undergraduate student, Dean Kamen. He used his creation of the insulin pump first to help meditate cancer via chemotherapy. From his experience treating cancer with the pump, he moved his experiments into Diabetic related fields. He founded the first insulin pump company and sold it to a company.

GMU Student Media

Hi classmates and fellow Patriots,

If you have taken the time out to read my blog header, notice I am quite involved in Student Media here at Mason. Between being the friendly face behind the news desk on Tuesday mornings and working as a contributor to Connect2Mason’s Opinion Column, I stay active in developing and pursuing my own interests in broadcast journalism. Aside from broadcasting, I am involved in Mason’s Student Government as a Senator in the 33rd Student Government; therefore, without further “ado” lobbying to persuade the Hill or working on the Hill in Public Affairs are both potential career paths as well.

My passion and dedication have lead me to create some cool student media projects thus far at Mason. I will actively post my links to my broadcast all of which integrate the news or politics. I encourage you all to take a look and provide feedback at your own discretion or even tune in Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. to Channel 231 or visit MasonCableNetwork.com/live to view our live web-stream.

Validity: The Digital Archives (Part 3)

Jane Brown’s senior research project was quite intriguing, and the fact her topic was about a quirky Virginian experience was even more interesting. I could tell from reading her blog she had researched her topic prior to interviewing sources and traveling to places to gain firsthand knowledge about the assignment. It appeared to me that Jane used her prior knowledge about the topic to make the judicial responses about her sources in determining fact from fiction. From her beginning research, she then narrowed down her research further to the blog “Panic of 1873” where Brown found more historical context to help add meaning to the topic as as result of the angle she took when her beginning research lead her to another outlet.

Validity: Digital Archives (Part 2)

“WE CAN DO IT!” the infamous Rosie the Riveter poster hangs in pride at my first glance in a Cracker Barrel. I instantly fall in love with the catchy slogan and charming female in the picture. It was not until my sophomore year in high school as to when I truly found the meaning behind the World War 2 propaganda. This era in history is one of my favorites to learn about; therefore, I chose to research the topic on Wikipedia.

After much reading through the introduction, context, and sources the article was very knowledgeable about the history behind the poster and society’s influence on the creation of Rosie the Riveter as a sign of feminism. Although, I thought there did seem to be a plethora of information and “hopefully” facts for there not to be more sources listed at the bottom. The author did a great job of summarizing such a pivotal, defining moment in history and the reaction of the 50’s on the WW2 propaganda itself.

The reliability of the Wikipedia article looks promising, but I am not a historical scholar or an in-depth Rosie the Riveter encyclopedia; therefore, I am not able to say for sure. The article was last modified on February 15th, the day I read the article, so I am assuming someone is playing edit-tag with a few other editors.

Validity: Digital Archives (Part 1)

It is all about the accuracy in blogging, journalism, and publications. We, the audience, the readers, rely on whatever is being read or looked at as a pre-assessed fountain of truth. When we click on a website, scroll to a picture, or read a sentence it is automatically a fact. Pictures say a thousand words, but what if those words, the same words we read in  a sentence of an article are actually false?

There is a moment our tummies do a little somersault and lips quiver at the notion a piece of “what the should be” is “what the is not.” Have no fear, it is up to us to become skeptical- let the questions arise and the brains turn on! It is time for us to take action in behind the truth factors, the validity, and reliability of the source: RESEARCH!

My favorite historical website is USHistory.org partly because I am a history buff and a love a good fact-of-the-day about U.S./American History. The domain registration results from whois.com resulted in as follows:

Research Analysis: Linking First Blog with Fourth Blog

Imagine sitting in the doctor’s office as a ten-year-old little girl or child about waiting on the diagnosis of test results. Keep in mind these test results will specifically diagnose the little girl with having or not having Type-1 Juvenile Diabetes; this is what my older sister had to endure thirteen years ago…

Both my parents and my sister were scared at first. How is one supposed to learn the correct dosages for insulin injections, blood sugar testing, and all of the Diabetic equipment into a lifestyle? More importantly, how will this devastating disease affect my sister’s life from now through eternity?!

Refer back to paragraph two, where I mentioned getting into the habit and knowing how to perform insulin injections which for now is the only source of life for a Diabetic. Insulin is the closest thing to a cure Diabetics have at this point. For my own personal digital past knowledge, I am curious about acquiring more knowledge on the subject of the Insulin Pump and how the piece of technology coincides with one’s body.

The journal among the Mason Library Database, “Development of Experimental Insulin Pumps With Glucose-Controlled Release,” is a relatively short article that luckily sums up my questions to a “T!” From the systematic organs in our body that play a vital role in coordinating with the Insulin Pump, to how the Pump responds to the signals released from our body this scholarly excerpt from the journal provides the reader with key facts.

Our body releases carbon dioxide that provides mechanical energy in the glucose-dependent detox. In reaction, the Insulin Pump’s delivery unit contains the 50 milligrams of dried yeast and glucose solution that are in turn incubated. The glucose solution produced from this insulin is given off to the body.

From this research, I want to use this to figure out new concepts for to advance Diabetic technology or even create a cure. Also, for my own personal pursuits of advocacy… I can use this new information for answers to the public’s questions about Diabetic supplies.

Food for Thought

After Professor Kelly sent out the link to the article via email, I instantly jumped on the assignment…

Jared Lanier’s article gave me plenty of “food for thought” about the Web 2.0 he helped to create and the surrounding digital world. It is a matter of self-identity on the web; that is the name of the game. A few notorious websites within the digital past and present are constantly being sued over identity and privacy rights. Websites control us. Watch us. Mimic us. Even Lanier sheds light on a particularly interesting futuristic thought- Nerd Rapture, “The belief that increasing computer speed and processing power will shortly result in machines acquiring “artificial intelligence,” consciousness, and that we will be able to upload digital versions of ourselves into the machines and achieve immortality.”

I do not know about this class, but I for one… Do not understand how the World Wide Web is becoming or has grown to a robotic, digital Hitler just waiting to attack? This is the very thing we, including Ray Bradbury, have all feared from the beginning, a ‘Fahrenheit 451’ takeover!
